The building blocks
- Users who need their own telephone number for calling must have licensing that includes Microsoft Teams and the Microsoft 365 Phone System application.
- Teams Phone licensing entitles a Teams user to use the Microsoft 365 Phone System application and enhanced calling capabilities.
- A PSTN solution is separate from a Teams Phone licence. PSTN access provides phone numbers and external calling connectivity.
Common licence scenarios
- Microsoft 365 E5 includes the Microsoft 365 Phone System application, so a separate Teams Phone Standard licence is not needed in that scenario.
- Users on other eligible Microsoft 365 or Office 365 plans may need Teams Phone Standard or a Teams Phone bundle.
- Microsoft Calling Plan is needed if Microsoft provides the PSTN access and phone numbers. If another operator provides PSTN, Microsoft does not require additional PSTN licensing beyond the Teams Phone licence.
Related account types
- Shared devices can use specialised shared device licensing.
- Auto attendants and call queues use Teams Phone Resource Account licensing.
- Shared Calling can allow multiple users to share one phone number with appropriate configuration and licensing.
